Summit Mt. Arisia

What you did?
Conceived and ran the event. Coordinated with Samantha about signage and ribbons, and with Mary about assorted logistics.

What went right?
Plenty of people were interested in working the event and it was quite popular and very well received among participants, several of whom dressed up for the occasion a number of whom made repeat ascents over the hour even knowing there would be no additional "reward". Another con-goer (with whom I am now in contact) made and hung a few inspirational signs along the way which were also enjoyed. Trading a token for a ribbon worked well. A volunteer made stickers for the second climb after we ran out of ribbons. The custom water bottles were a hit as well, and in general, Mary was quite helpful.

What went wrong?
It was a lot more popular than anyone predicted and we ran out of ribbons about halfway through the first climb. The stickers for day 2 arrived much later than expected and initially resulted in a bit of a back-up at the peak until I implemented a fallback plan.

What should be done differently next year?

  1. More ribbons. My lowball estimate is that we had at least 250 climbers over the course of the two days. Be explicit regarding oneribbon per person.
  2. Stickers for repeat ascents. I caught a couple of people collecting multiple ribbons for repeat ascents, though they were nice about returning all but one when I told them how low we were. It'd be greatto have enough ribbons for each climber and then be able to add a sticker ("Again!") for each additional climb.
  3. More signs. I am already in contact with this year's signmaker who has told me she wants to make more as well as another volunteer who already wants to sign on for next year. I'd love to have a sign for every level as well as a big Base Camp sign for the bottom (we improvised one on day 2), as attendees sometimes found it difficult to tell if they'd found the right place.
  4. Have two people at the peak to deal more efficiently with surges.
  5. Have the water bottles around halfway up rather than at the bottom, to simplify Base Camp and also to function more as a water station where people might need it.

Are there any changes you'd make to the schedule for next year?
I'd be curious to hear feedback regarding whether the scheduling generally worked.

Vendors you used?
Wherever the ribbons come from. Rachel Sommer made the stickers but declined reimbursement, citing the very low cost.
